I ran Shell for the sponsor support of #29, they then added 10% ethanol. I then went to Exxon which did not have it. They have started to carry it. Ethanol mixed gas sucks period. I did the MPG math, I lost a few miles on ethanol blended gas. So I went back to Shell.

 

For the Evo, I stick with Shell 93. The DD I go with whatever is cheapest and/or most convenient at the time.

 

Its in Triangle right across from Quantico Marine base about a block or 2 off rt 1 . It also helps that we add some premium to our regular because we are such low volume we have a hard time getting rid of the good stuff . I cant remember if were 91 or 93 but we tried to figure out if we added like 200 gallons of premium to the regular what octane it would raise it to and it was like 89.5 or 90 (200 gals of premium into 500 gals of regular) so our customers get a lil extra kick about once every 2 months .

 

No minus, ever. If it says 87 on the pump, it should test 87 by the R+M/2 method at any point in time. NEVER less. That is a "minimum" number. Same goes with other R+M/2 method fuels.

Deal is, that if you have 93 Octane, with a RON of 102, it has a MON of 84. 102 is the octane rating under a Zero Load Condition, or the actual octane of the fuel. MON is a test to determine how it reacts under a load, and the load is far less than what the average street engine provides, to be honest, but at least it's a constant used for testing. A different brand, with a different additive package, or the difference in a summer and winter formulation, might yield results of a Gas with the same 93 R+M/2, but with a 98 RON, and 87 MON. Let's just say, that in a car prone to knock, it would be a HUGE difference in power.

Basically, the highest MON Unleaded fuel I know of is MS109. It's MON is 101. Compared with Sunoco 100 Unleaded, with a RON of 100, and a MON, IIRC, of 89 or 90, it's drastically superior! It's also rather expensive.
In fact, Sunoco 110 Leaded, has a 100 or 99 MON, so it's actually more resistant to knock than the average leaded race fuel, such as CAM2 (108 RON).

Hence why I asked the guy who's doing all the testing, to provide the RON/MON for some of the various blends in the area with the additives in the fuel.

 

surprised not much has been said anything about chevron, read in a magazone one of the tuners recommended BP or chevron about 3-4 yrs ago, i race motocross and notice a lot less backfire when running chevron, i will have to try shell next time since everyone says it is so good. if i could find non-ethanol gas, it runs MUCH better on that.

1.8t Dub always gets the BP 93..they are hard headed as is lol and the daily gets whatever is cheapest and close..the dub does not care for 10% mix though..

 

Chevron = Texaco these days. Same stuff, since they're the same company.
BP has, well, almost forever, had one of the better additive packages.

In most recent times, Shell seems to have the better additives. Exxon, surprisingly, seems to do well, especially on the 10% Ethanol Blends. I was seeing the least Knock Retard on Exxon Gas, until I got some 100% BP or Shell....

 

I pay the extra at this noname station down the road that still has ethanol-free gas. Premium of course, the Rx7 just doesn't seem to run right without it.
