Those are all I can think of at this exact time, but if you get the DMV book it will tell you all the different things you can and cannot do.
I didnt know about the interstate thing. I had heard about the no night riding, but are you sure about the interstate?

Here is a blurb from the VA DMV site:

You must pass the motorcycle knowledge exam.
If you do not currently hold a valid learner's permit or driver's license, you must also pass the two-part driver's license knowledge exam.
If you are under age 19, you must hold a Virginia motorcycle learner's permit for at least nine months.
You must wear an approved safety helmet.
You must wear eye and face protection.
You must be supervised by a person at least 21 years of age who is licensed to operate a motorcycle, who is alert and able to assist you and is supervising from a separate accompanying motor vehicle.
You cannot carry passengers with a motorcycle learner's permit.

I found this in a PDF on the DOE website relating to Virginia:

21 years of age or older, or by his/her parent or legal guardian, or by a brother, halfbrother,
half-sister, stepbrother, or stepsister 18 years of age or older.
Motorcycle learner permit holders may not:
operate on limited access highways; and
• carry a passenger.
What is a limited access highway?

Sorry to make 3 consecutive posts, but I thought this information might be useful to others thinking about taking the permit written test or who want to supplement the DMV written book with more info. Here is the VA DMV practice test website: http://www.dmv.state.va.us/dmvweb/kats/sne_intro.asp

You select the "Motorcycle License" Practice Test and it runs you through 10 mock questions that are all very similar if not the exact same questions that appear on the actual test at the DMV.

I did the practice test 6 times for a total of 60 questions. Yes, alot of the questions repeate from test to test, but I probably saw a total of 25 new/different questions out of those 60.

I also read the book and highlighted briefly, but felt like I already knew where to look in the book and from which sections the questions would be coming from.

This helped me get a 24/25 on my test and got me my permit. The guy behind me wasnt so lucky.

I tried to search this thread, but has anyone with an out of state MC License tried to get a Va License? Do i need to start over from the beginning? I'm 25, my MC/ Drivers license is from Louisiana. I was previously drivers licensed only in Va, but had to switch to Louisiana to get the MC on it because i was stationed there. I've taken the BRC and ERC through the MSF, and i'm considering becoming an instructor since i can do it free of charge where i'm stationed. Can i ride motorcycles in Va with an out of state license, i've heard mixed stories since i've been in the military. Thanks!

As long as you have the "M" designation on your Louisiana DL, you should be perfectly legal to ride in VA until your LA license expires.

As far as the process for switching an out-of-state "M" designation to a VA license..I dont know the answer there.

Where is your Home of record?
Regardless, if you have an out of state DL AND and active mil ID don't worry about it.
My Texas DL is > anything from VA DMV
