Question 02 Explorer 4WD

Ok i was wondering how to tell if my truck is in 4wd. The owners manual tells me that there is no indicator to tell me if it is in 4wd auto but there are ones to tell me if it is in 4wd high and low.

This may be a dumb question but i am new to the whole 4x4 thing.

edit: I just realized that this probobly should be in the offroad section. Im just used to posting in here.

put it in 4-wheel mode and turn the wheel all the way to one side and give it a little gas, you should feel the front wheels gripping if you are on pavement.

I don't think he wants to know if it IS 4wd, he wants to know if its IN 4wd.

You have to have the truck in Neutral to put it in four wheel drive obviously, and as long as "4WD LOW" or "4WD" is lit up, you're in four wheel drive...

I don't know much about the third gens but that's how my second gen is and I'm sure it's the same.

EDIT:
I just re-read that. Four wheel drive high is the same as "auto." It shouldn't engage the front tires until the back ones slip. Four low always uses front and rear and a lower gear range from the transfer case.

DING DING DING, I think CHAHOND hit it. My guess is that it is AWD, therefore allways in 4wd. Hence the only lights are to let you know if it is in high or low range.
