Any good Jeep mechanics?
Could anyone recommend a good Jeep mechanic in the 757 area to work on my '94 Jeep Cherokee (XJ) 4.0L Automatic with roughly 120k miles?
I need the following:
- Replace rear main seal (common oil leak problem)
- Locate possible coolant leak and fix
- Replace faulty U-joints (intermittent grinding sounds)
- Adjust valves as needed
- Diagnose random engine knocking issues (here are some symptoms)
--> Engine knocks when first started in morning for a few seconds then stops
--> Engine knocks at upper RPM range just before a shift
--> Engine knocks when you ease off the gas pedal when driving
--> All other times, the motor sounds normal
My guess is it is either a timing issue or a faulty oil pump. If anyone can recommend someone who knows the 4.0L I6 like the back of their hand, I would really appreciate it.

hey whats up. sounds to me like your have a faulty oil pump or maybe the pickup tube is clogged or falen off into the pan. the knocking in the morning is just the engine getting the oil into the head so youll here it in the morning. upper rpm sounds like it starving. im saying oil pump. and you need to set your valves. you can do the work yourself its not to hard. but if you need someone i do work on jeeps. acually i work on anything with an engine. let me know
Hey... thanks for the reply! I was in Dallas all last week at a conference and didn't get a chance to check the forums.
I need to perform an oil change, so I'll see if I can get the oilpan off and possibly replace the oil pump while I'm in there. I did hear that removing an oilpan off a Jeep is quite difficult if it is not lifted, but I'll take a look at it when I get a chance. If I have any questions... I'll PM you.
Thanks!
