Those of you who have gotten exhaust citations.....
I'd like to hear from those of you who have had exhaust tickets and how you fought/beat them in court. This bull**** is getting ridiculous, in the last 4 months i've been stopped three times for exhaust and last night I recieved my second citation. This stop, along with my previous two, both in ****fax county of course were complete BS. I was at light and the cop was about 5 cars back in the other lane. I wasn't doing anything to attract attention. I was just turning onto Braddock this evening to go home. The cop pulled me over and wrote me a summons illegal/unapproved equipment (exhaust). I asked him why it was illegal, and all he said was that it was not a factory installed option. He also said my exhaust was loose and not approved for the car, yet it is a direct replacement for the stock system and bolts in the same way and utilizes all of the hardware that the factory system does.
I don't understand why my car attracts so much attention. My car is clean, no stickers or riceboy modificarions. only visible mods are tint (which was on the car when I bought it), and a stillen cat back....btw the car is a 97 Maxima. I bought this car to get away from the racer scene, as my previous car was a 400hp 94 Z28. My last stopped was the same generic BS, the cop said my exhaust was too loud . The exhaust law has to be the most ridiculous double standard. In my Camaro I had headers, no cats, exhaust and a mild cam. That car was LOUD, and I never got harrased once, I even had a cop come up to me and tell me my car sounded nice (which it did). My buddy's with modded mustangs and camaro's have never been stopped ONCE for exhaust. What about Harley's, do they ever get stopped? I've read the law, which is so vague, I don't know how it can even be a law.
The stillen cat back is supposed to be one of the quieter systems for the Maxima, which is one reason why I bought it. I bought the Maxima to get out of the street race scene, I've been harassed more in this car then I ever did in my Camaro and Rx-7 combined. I called Stillen and am working on getting a letter from them saying the exhaust is built to meet factory specs.
Now the good part......ok, paying a $70 fine sux and all,but it turns out that an unapproved equipment is not minor as many may think. Not only does this go on your driving record, your insurance may also go up as a result of an exhaust ticket. Depending on who your insurance is, I know Progressive and Allstate treat it as a surchargeable violation. I found out when just went to renew my insurance.I was curious as to why my insurance had gone up yet I had no new moving violations. I called my insurance company (Progressive), and they told me in these exact words "While it is not a moving violation, it still shows up on your MVR and is therefore a surchargeable violation." A check of my driving record confirmed that. I think its bull**** that your insurance should go up for an exhaust ticket. I work full time, go to college, pay my taxes, and I sure as hell shouldn't have to deal with this bull****. As soon as i'm done with school, the only thing I have to say is goodbye ****fax county.

there just predjudice to import drivers..they will tell you that to themselves...i got pulled at the airport couple months back...the funny thing was the cop pulled me over for no front tag..he ended up giving me a exhaust ticket..funny thing is he lied in court..he said that i flew past him..but i was sitting in nuetral and he walked up to my car...i found that funny since he said i flew past him at 30-40mph..i shoulve got a reckless not an exhaust ticket

I currently have Progressive and this is what they told me when I asked about it "While it is not a moving violation, it still shows up on your MVR and is therefore a surchargeable violation." I know Allstate will raise your rates for
exhaust/equipment tickets also.
Your insurance may not go up for one exhaust ticket, but multiple violations can affect your "risk classification" and that in turn will affect your rates. I don't know about other insurance companies, as I only have experience with Allstate and Progressive.

i've gotten 2 exaust tickets and 2 window tint tickets, as well as a no front plate ticket. as far as i can tell, my insurance hasn't gone up any for those. i have geico, btw. i just paid all of them over the phone with my card.
oh....a guy i know was ticketed for having a STOCK exaust on his evo, and showed up to court and the judge finally accepted that the exaust was stock when he showed proof from the dealer. stupid stupid stupid.

I think in some aspect they are Bias towards people who even give off the smallest look of a modified import(i.e. tinted windows and or ricey tails)
I myself get a bit worried being that i drive 30 min to and from work on the FFX Parkway so i do see my share of cops and not only that my M is modified so its not like you cant miss me or hear me. I just try to blend in with the flow of traffic and try to stay away from any of the inside lanes where the cops like to hide in.
