Re: Rt 29 on saturday
(WUSA) -- It's the last place you'd expect multiple arrests to take place. But a church parking lot is the place Fairfax County Police say 37 people, 34 adults and three juveniles, were about to be involved in a street race.
After receiving a tip from an alert citizen, police converged on the Centreville Presbyterian Church Saturday morning at 12:45. We're told patrol cars pulled up and blocked the one entrance off Lee Highway to the Centreville Presbyterian Church. They charged the 37 people there with trespassing. A police spokesperson says they could not charge them with street racing since the race hadn't started yet.
Don Halterman, Director of Praise and Worship at the church says he had heard rumors that street racing would happen now and then along Lee Highway near the Bull Run Battlefield. He said he's thankful police stopped the dangerous activity before anyone was hurt.
After recent tragedies involving street racing, including the deadly incident in Accokeek, Maryland on February 16, 2008, police seem to be more vigilant.
However, in this case, one of those charged, 19 year old Sarah Bacon, says police got wrong. She says she and her cousins were there because they had had car trouble, not because there was about to be a race. Bacon says police have no proof a race was to take place.
Officer Shelley Broderick with Fairfax County Police says they had received a tip from a citizen that a group was gathering in the parking lot and looked like they would be racing. She says the officers on the scene determined there were enough signs, such as numbers on cars, that a race was going to take place.
Bacon says the reason numbers were on cars is because some of the people there actually race on legal drag racing tracks. She added that if they were really street racing, they would not put numbers on their cars.
