Default illegal?

Well I'm ready to buy a set of HID system for my Honda, but some people told me that since 2003. It's illegal to have it in Va? Is that true? Also what brand would you people recommend to get? Thanks.

I don't think it is illegal as long as they are OEM.

I've only heard theories and rumors about the HIDs.

If they are approved for on-road use by the National Highway Transportation Administration (in that they have a DOT number and everything), then they can be used on ANY road in ANY state. Federal law ALWAYS overrides state law.

To my knowledge, the sale of individual HID Bulbs is illegal. I forget the reason.

Just make sure your HIDs are aligned right. If they are being imported from Japan, then they will not be aligned correctly. If you gotta import them from somewhere, try and get Euro spec ones from a country where people drive on the right.

Hid kits suck. No matter how good the lighting is, your stock honda headlight housing will always fuck it up. You should just buy some bmw ballasts and retrofit them in a projector style headlight.

This link shows how bad some hid kits are. They will never be true hid kits.

Halogen made headlight housings + wanna-be hid ballasts = disgusting results.

If you don't have projectors, don't bother, the lights will look yellow and crappy, and you'll have to get 8000K's for them to "look" right at which point the light output will suck.

Vendors are not allowed to sell HID kits, see here for the details:

Will your safety inspector notice? Will a cop notice? If they are aimed right, it's pretty unlikely.

Riddle me this.

Communications Act of 1934 [Federal] states that we (as citizens) are free to observe any wave signal we desire. Yet radar dectectors are illegal in VA [State]. Why?
