You can't roadrace without a legal racecar and a competition license. You can, however, do a High Performance Driving Event on a roadcourse in any car that will pass tech. The nearest one to your area is Summit Point Motorsports Park outside Winchester:

There will be excellent HPDE's there on Aug 25-26 and Oct 13-14 with NASA:

With no prior experience you would start in HPDE1 with an instructor riding along, passing only on the straightaways with a point-by signal from the lead car:

Hope it helps,

Jon

Plus if I recall correctly...a LOT of folks wreck their cars when they RR them.
Assuming that you are talking about actual wheel-to-wheel roadracing, you can buy or build many kinds of competitive cars for well under $20k (BMW 325is, Mustang, Camaro, various Hondas, various Volkswagens, Miata, or Porsche 944) with NASA ( http://www.nasaproracing.com nationally and http://www.nasaracing.net regionally. ) Entry fees run about $350 a weekend for several hours of track time. Some people can go all season on 2 sets of brakes and 6-8 tires. That's dirt cheap as far as roadracing goes.

And yes there are a few wrecks in roadracing... but I wouldn't call it "a LOT."

You get more seat time on a roadcourse before lunch on the first day than you get in an entire season of drag racing... therefore I think you may find that it is actually cheaper in terms of "dollars per minute of seat time" all things considered.

Not better or worse, just different.
