what exactly is it doing as far as gear selection problems? shifter moves freely? shifter wont move out of particular gear?

Yes the shifter moves freely...I think it may be due to a clutch spring breaking loose...I am on the verge of getting the clutch replaced and then selling the vehicle since interest in it not running is rather low. But as to the gear selection problem, if you start the car with the vehicle in first gear it will lurch forward as if the clutch is at the friction point...thats why I believe the problem is not from internal tranny damager
