this is very tempting. would it be advisable to go if the car I'd be racing is also my means of transport to and from the event? mostly concerned about gas...

I drove to and from the last event. I brought some extra suspension arms and that's about it. I ended up bending one of my RUCAs, but it was literally on my last lap, by that I mean I was planning on it being my last lap.
I live ~45 mins away from the event though. I have driven to VIR and back before (3-3.5 hours away) and done a drift event. It was definitely nerve racking but I was glad I did it. Driftwater is MUCH more beginner friendly then VIR. There is very little to run into, as long as you can avoid 2-3 run off spots that are not ideal there is really little to no chance of running into something.

I want to go to this but I have some prior engagements that I forgot about.

I can't make the August date. This is a great track for everyone. Last one was my first event and I drove my car there, drifted the shit out of it, and drove it home. Bring your daily driver!
