Actually the D15B is 3 stage VTEC-E
12V mode for economy
2500-5500 stage two then top end stage 3 5500 to redline.
This allows for "economy" mode at low speeds
Standard during cruising speeds
And performance when you want it.
Its actually a very complex engine, might be interested in this in a few weeks if it's still here.
How far ru from the beach?
