You might get more responses if you list the make, model, and year of the bike. You could also try searching on google for a how-to. I'm sure there's a forum somewhere more closely related to your bike than vadriven. If all else fails, get a clymer's manual for your bike.

636's always tick. it's in the cam chain tensioner. i wouldn't worry about that too much. but if it's due for a valve service, then have at it.

as far as the valve adjust goes, it's not really hard, but it is time consuming, and if you don't get the timing dead nuts when you put it all back together, you might kiss your motor goodbye. not trying to scare you off doing it yourself, but make SURE it goes back together right, or you'll have hard parts hitting hard parts in the motor. shim/bucket valve setups like your 636 has are more difficult to do (compared to something with threaded adjusters), and if anything is out of adjustment, you're going to need a selection of shims to get it all back in spec.

got a number i can call? i was thinking of doing it myself, but might let him do it for me. as for the 636 always ticking, i THINK its the valves. the book says 15,000 miles have the valves checked, im at 14 now, so i guess i should have them check and adjusted if needed.

agreed, you're due for a valve servive anyway, but don't be surprised if it still ticks a bit even after the adjustment.
