if you really want to cover it up, go get a roll of header wrap.

does it get as hot as a boosted engine??? i doubt it....Mine stays black. JUST DONT SOAK and SOAK it in a thick ass layer of paint, thats when itwill peel off. mine is still black.

Ya Steve knows his shit. I bought a can of rustoleum paint and I was told it would stick, regardless of if it does or not it should help the rust problem to some extent. It's literally suppose to change the rust back to metal so maybe it'll burn off but the rust will be gone?? lol we'll see.

if you just want it to be black, get a container of naval jelly. it'll turn the rust into black primer and be less likely to burn off.

on a double wall header paint will stay on, but most sportbikes are single wall and get stupid hot. i've seen plenty of sportbikes with glowng headersafter a good hard use. hell, SOME bikes will glow the headers at idle.

This stuff is the bomb!! I will be honost, haven't used them on headers yet though. If you are in the Navy, ask around, somebody has some...probably boatswain mates or ABs.

I have taken a set of headers completely down, sanded and used a wire wheel. Painted with 1800 degree paint and it burned off...right at the first bend. Steve is right, the only way you will get it done correctly is to have it coated professionally by someone like JetHot (http://www.jet-hot.com/) or just wrap them with header wrap. It will cost you around $50 for the wrap and ties. You can get a whole kit for a car (does two bike headers) for that, and go in with a buddy, so it is cheaper. You can then paint the wrap with 500 degree paint and it will look fine!

The high temp paints work ok on stock exhaust and maybe your mid pipes, but the headers will actually get over 2000 degrees in some spots. Something to do with a high reving bike motor!

heres something better, i use it for under my car when it gets scraped, but it works. then paint it, its better than just painting over it.

you can get it form advance, i did. :]

you wipe it on, it desolves the rust, then you wipe it off. its pretty easy and fast :] and its a lot easier than sanding it off and all. :]

Re: Product to spray over rust?

Looks the same as Naval Jelly...probably the same thing. The Ospho is a liquid, and you just brush it on, or if the part is small enough, you put some in a bowl and drop it in! Only problem with Oshho is that is you need to wear rubber gloves since it is an acid!
They both work about the same. You don't have to sand the rust off for them to work.

Edit: while googling Naval Jelly, I found this experiment. Long story short, Naval Jelly did a better job than CLR Rust Remover, and placed Permatex Rust Treatment Rust Remover in third.

Re: Product to spray over rust?

hmmm, good info to know. I basically just want the rust gone since I can't buy the lower fairings I need because I have an R1 conversion front, but the company doesn't sell the lower fairing separately so I figured I'd get the headers looking a little better until I find a way to cover them... I wish fairings weren't so damn expensive! i got other stuff I need to do to the bike to make it good...
