I need to change my oil pump so I have to remove the clutch. I have a 2004 gixxer 750. The manual states I need to use a special clutch remover tool. Does anyone in NOVA have one I can rent? Is there a way to remove the clutch without this tool? The tool holds the clutch from free spinning when removing the center bolt.

just use an impact. even the stealerships don't use that "special tool".

They most likely use a "special tool" to remove all the plates (metal/fiber), when i pulled mine out i was able to get most of them i used a thin flathead and a few of them that were further in i just tipped the bike the other side and they slid out.

Can you show us this tool they say you need?

lil hint... the plates are...steel..... get a couple of mechanics magnets (magnets on a stick, usually right next to the register at an auto parts store for a buck a piece) and you can get the plates out no prob.


the tool they say you need is a toothed piece that locks the clutch basket gear so you can use a socket to loosen the nut. like I said, an impact does the trick. no special tools needed.

DO NOT under any circumstances wedge a flat blade screwdriver in the gears to keep em from spinning. I've seen people do it, and watched them tear up the teeth on the clutch basket/crank.

when i did my clutch i didnt need anything, just 5 bolts holding the springs down and they came right off with a quick snap of a ratchet.

I'm trying to remove the clutch basket to get to the oil pump so I don't need to remove the individual clutch plates. There's a center bolt which holds the basket. When I try to torque the center bolt the whole basket rotates. Will the torque from an impact wrench be too much on the gears? I was reading that an impact wrench outputs 200-300 lbs/ft of torque. I'm worried this will destroy my gears since my bike has what 80lbs/ft of torque? It's a 2004 gixxer 750.

so turn the impact down if you're worried about it.

seriously though, I, along with many many many other mechanics, have been doing it that way and I've NEVER seen anyone have an issue.
