Dirtbike Questions

My fiances little brother is turning 12 in a month and he really wants a dirt bike. I remember when I got mine and it was probably the best birthday ever.

Well I have not ridden or been around them since then so I do not know whats what or what size to get him.

He is only about 5 foot tall but I dont want him to outgrow it in a year..

So what is a good brand and size and year to look for for him for around 1000 bucks or under. I am sure he is going to destroy it over the next 3 years or so, so I do not want to buy new.

Re: Dirtbike Questions

honda xr100 Would be a good bike for him for under a 1000 bucks.

Re: Dirtbike Questions

So a 100cc is going to be a good size for him??

I dont want to get it too small so that his friends are leaving him in the dust but I dont want it to be tall for him either.

Thank you for the suggestion.

Re: Dirtbike Questions

Get him a Honda CRF150 and should be good. Make sure you buy the one with the bigger wheels. Or two stroke 85cc.

Re: Dirtbike Questions

^I was gunna say a 125 or 150. I learned to ride with a bike much too tall for me, but height doesn't matter when your rolling.

Plus I learned to respect the power because it scared me senseless at first.

CRF150F.

Re: Dirtbike Questions

If he has never ridden, and you don't want him to out grow it, he is in a funky place age wise to where once he gets the hang of it, he may outgrow a 100/125/150 pretty quickly. Also, if you are thinking 3 years down the road or so, he is REALLY going to have outgrown it by then. I had a beat to shit Honda 82 cr350 at 12, but had been riding since 6, and my pops was more of the type to buy something to grow into, than have to replace every year or so.

Since it's not your kind, and a future brother-in-law, have you cleared this idea with his folks? That can be a huge deciding factor too.

The Kawi xr250 is a fun little run around, that would be good to get him acclimated, handles trails well, and isn't over the top. 4 stroke too, so a bit easier to maintain.

all of the 150s I am finding are over 1200 dollars....

Re: Dirtbike Questions

His parents are ok with it over a fourwheeler. I dont care if he outgrows it in 3-4 years but just dont want something he is going to get tired of in a month.

I am looking at a 2004 CRF100 tonight....if its in great condition what would you guys pay it? Or at least what is a good price? Also what are some things to look at on the bike before buying?? Thank you guys for all your help...I need these answers asap!!

Re: Dirtbike Questions

make sure the breaks are in good condition, that it idles smooth, no trouble in shifting, and not blowing smoke(unless maybe on start up, if it hasn't run in a while). Plastics/cosmetics are all secondary. Suspension on those little things hardly ever fail. aAlso, make sure the kill switch works, lil kid will need to learn that button/switch!

Re: Dirtbike Questions

so same as a street bike basically...thank you sir. Now I just gotta figure out whats a good price to pay for it.

Re: Dirtbike Questions

How much are they asking. . .a few hundred seems ok(like $500-#850 if fair) if it is it the right condition.

EGon10psi 06-26-2012 05:25 PM

Re: Dirtbike Questions

There were asking 875...then considered my offer of 700...but now wont come off 800...

Re: Dirtbike Questions

Get there with cash money, in hand, and that can be a bit mnore persuasive. While the price seems fair, if it is in as good a condition as it states/looks, than cool. . . but nothing wrong with a haggle.

Tell them you have a guy that knows all about these kind of things, do they mind if you call him in to take a look, lol.

Re: Dirtbike Questions

If he's already 12 I'd venture to say he'll outgrow that thing real quick man. A 4 stroke 100cc dirt bike is definitely beginner friendly but it's not a bike that will last him for a few years. A CRF150 would be perfect like Matt said.

EGon10psi 06-26-2012 05:41 PM

Re: Dirtbike Questions

Is that not going to be too tall for him? Hes only about 5 foot tall? Also I am trying to keep it under 800 for the price of the bike...do you guys know of any anywhere?

Re: Dirtbike Questions

If you haven't found one on CL, or trading Post, than who knows. . . I am sure they are out there, but, it's enough for him to have fun on, learn the controls, and just get the feeling of being on 2 wheels under power.

Plus, resell value is pretty stable on these things. SO long as it is maintained, and he doesn't flog it, you can sell it for more than likely, what you paid for it, when the time comes.

Okay still have not found one because I want to buy local as I am scared of driving over an hour to find a piece of shit....

A buddy of mine has a 2004 rm65 with a little work done such as weisco pistons and as sprocket and such.....Would this be an ok bike for him to start on? I can get it for around 800 bucks

go for it. That's not a bad price at all, if it is running strong, and has a little work done to it.

Re: Dirtbike Questions

Thank you sir...going to look at it tomorrow....these are the mods....rethnal sprocket, seven eights handle bars, weisco piston,v force reeds, and asv clutch leaver.

Anything I need to watch out for on these bikes?

should it come with a title?

Sometimes a dirtbike will have a title, if this one does, it will probably say For Offroad Use Only up top. In FL, you need a title to get it stickered to ride in the state forests, I don't think you need one in VA because they're so uptight here it's hard to find anywhere to legitimately ride anyhow.

I'd say you can't really go wrong with an RM65...it's small enough (height wise) to where even if it's a bit peppy for him, he won't be intimidated by standover height and if he does dump it, he doesn't have far to get to the ground.

Personally, I look at any mods within the engine as a minus, but I'm weird like that. I tend to be a pessimist and wonder what warranted that mod in the first place. If it's a 2004, I'd def try to get it for less than 800, it's not like there's a huge market for an 8 year old 65cc dirtbike at the present.

Well kbb has it for 960 and he has all this work done to it with receipts so I guess for 750 to 800 I really cant go wrong. Thank you guys for all the info.

I understand wanting a good deal, but it's been like 3 months, just get the kid a bike. It's not going to cost a mint, it's not like he is going to be on it for the rest of his life, he will outgrow it and move on. . .hell, if you got it on the month this thread was started, he might be bored with it by now:dunno: lol

Re: Dirtbike Questions

lol....well its for the inlaws...so it kinda has to be a good bike. I was going to get the RM but it got stolen before I could pick it up. Which out of those 2 bikes tat do you think is the better bike for him both fro starting and for lasting.

Well, he is 13 now, right? Get him involved in the decision making process. If it is something he is into/wants to get into, go over the pros/cons, and let him get involved. He will take better care of it, have more respect for it, and won't be so quick to loose interest if he has a vested interest. He's a "young adult", treat him as such.

Ahhh, Ok, I misunderstood the original Post. My bad.

I would go for the 85, or a hundred. . .he will outgrow it, but it's a good trial period to see how he takes to the machine. If he has a good head on his shoulders, something a little bigger will have a longer shelf life, and teach how to respect a machine, not just get on it, open it up and pop the clutch(like he will get to on an 85/100). Again, a LOT of personal variables involved.

Two completely different bikes my man.

That KX85 is a 2 stroke rocket that he could potentially get himself into some trouble on.

The TTR125 on the other hand is a 4 stroke woods bike, probably MUCH better to learn on and he could ride it for a bit before he gets the bug to just go fast all the time.

Even though one's an 85 and one's a 125, believe me that 85 is a ton quicker than the TTR. Different kind of torque as well.

I'd go for the TTR125 just because he's a beginner, and it looks to be in great shape. Offer him $900 cash he'll prob bite.

I didn't even realize the 2-stroke, good point too. A LOT more responsive, and "peppy", than a 4. Also, i think a 4 is easier to maintain, and you don't have to mix oil/gas, iirc.

Absolutely. 2 very big advantages for the 4 stroke.
