ah... okay yeah. I just read "run the piss out of it" and closed the page.
Basically you just want to get the rings to break in nicely and the bearings to form to the camshaft(if you have them) and crankshaft without galling.
I don't give it full throttle for the first 600 miles either but that's a whole different discussion.
It's important to rev up through the gears then let off in each of the gears because engine breaking will force the contaminants out of the piston rings and engine vacuum will suck it out. If you're firing on that cylinder when the contaminants get forced past the rings they'll most likely stay in there because of the force of the combustion, also they'll get hot and potentially deposit themselves on the walls.

The reason to go on longer rides is to give the oil a chance to warm up and do its job.

I broke in the the 650 and the Z1000 that way.

Lots of up and down on the tranny and the revs. Lots of engine braking and heat cycling of the engine.
