do you have a rear stand? if so this makes it sooooo much easier b/c you can just spin the wheel and clean the chain easy... what i do is pop it up on the rear stand, put cardboard under the bike and also put some cardboard between the tire and chain, spray wd40 on one spot and just spin the wheel so it gets on all of the chain, let it sit in for a few minutes, then scrub the chain w/ a old tooth brush, then i hose it down w/ wd40 again and then go back w/ a couple rags and get all the wd40 and grime off that i can, you can never get it perfect, unless you literally use 30 towels and an hour of your time, but then i go for a 10 minute ride to let the rest of the wd40 dry and fling off and also to let the chain warm up, then as soon as i pull back in the driveway while the chain is still warm i put it on the rear stand again and spray the chain w/ your choice of chain lube or wax, i use maxima chain wax

I personally won't let WD-40 touch my chain in any way, shape or form...............................

Buy a chain degreaser and spray it on the chain while on your rear stand. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes, then wipe it off with a lint free cloth. Repeat this process till your chain is clean. Then use a wax like Del said since you have an o-ring chain. A wax won't fly off at speed, and it will repel dirt.

why wouldn't you let wd40 touch your chain? i would say the same about degreaser, i detailed cars for years and know how corrosive degreasers are, to get them to a level where they won't hurt paint and stuff you'd have to dilute it w/ so much water it would defeat the purpose, and if you get it on a aluminum frame or polished wheels your screwed, and it will break down the o/x ring's grease... wd40 is safe on everything except for the tires of course, there was a discussion about this on gixxer.com, some guys said no to wd40 but their reasons were proved false, you might not want to soak the chain too bad as it could dissolve the ring's grease... but if you still don't feel comfortable use kerosene thats actually a more widely approved form of chain cleaner anyways, but doesn't come in a spray can like wd40 which i find conveinant, and i would not lube it w/ a 80/90 weight oil, the owner's manuals still list false information, such as using automatic transmission fluid in place of fork oil.... pick up some form of specialized chain lube or wax, my complaint about most of the lubes is they dry white and look like hell all over your chain/swingarm/wheel, maxima chain wax is a goldish color and doesn't fling

This is like talking about politics or religion.................some people like WD-40, some people don't. I do however agree with the kerosene; it's a great chain cleaner. I just prefer to not ever have WD-40 touch my chain............I'm not saying it's right or wrong; just my opinion.
