01 SV+ VFR swing mod
Hey Skrooz (or anyone)
my friends and i are still working the 91 VFR arm onto my SV650s. does anyone know of any write ups anywhere on whats required? what needs to be shaven or cut/machined or used? we have access to a full machine shop.
a few other ques..
chain alignment?
spacing the wheel to the center?
motomorphic seems to have done it several times but theres no info there.
swingarm is slightly wider than the SV's mounts.
seems we have to use the SV cam/shock linkage and arms.
i'll be posting pics later tonight.
ANY info would be appreciated from anyone. cpu will still be up, here in the shop for a while while we ponder and work other projects.
thanks!!!

Re: 01 SV+ VFR swing mod
should have used a later model vfr arm, the pivot is narrower.
in any case, if you have access to a machine shop, just pop the swingarm bearings out, and the center tube. machine the swingarm so that the bearings sit farther inward. trim the center tube to suit, and machine the swinagarm pivot so that it's narrower. i had to do the same thing when i swapped the gsxr suspension into my old xs650.
you need to take all 20mm off the right side so that the swinger moves over to the right, b/c your chain alignment is waaaay off. even then, from the looks of it, you may have to do some machining on the hub to bring the rear sprocket in some. in moving the swinger over, you'r probably going to have to redo all the suspension linkages. you NEED to use the vfr linkages and shock. the leverage ratio of the sv's linkages will make the bike handle like garbage.
there's alot involved in that swap. and it's not easy. the sv's shock is offset to the left, and you need to move the swinger to the right. you're probably going to have to come up with a new upper mount. basically, do what you have to do to get the swinger lined up and fitted in the frame, with the wheel centered and the chain running true, and the concentrate on the shock mount. nothing on that swap is a bolt on deal.
if you happen to come across a vfr800 arm, i'm looking for one

Re: 01 SV+ VFR swing mod
whats the advantage in using the 800 swinger? ive seen a pic and if i was looking at the right one.. the mount isnt one solid piece across? its more of a 'Y' ?
searching the net.. i read of a VFR/CBR RR conversion and they were knocking off the shock mount and rewelding it. yikes! thats the kind of work i'll be in for eh?

the 800 arm mounts in the engine cases... like my 954 does.... see where i'm going with this??? lol
the 800 arm wouldn't work on an sv. the vfr arms go into cbr's real easy. much easier than an sv. you'll probably end up having to rework the upper shock mount, because of the different offsets of the mounts on the arm vs. the frame. it's not too hard to do, you just need to have a competent aluminum welder. once you get the arm in the frame and centered, the mounts are the easy part.
