Default Weird Automatic Transmission Problem

Thought maybe you guys might have an idea of what's going on. My sister's car is an automatic and when you first start it up, it's like the transmission doesn't engage right away. Instead of releasing the brakes and the car lurches forward, it'll just stand still, or even roll back if it's on a hill almost likes it's a manual with a really shitty driver behind the wheel. And if you gas it, it'll just suddenly catch after second usually producing wheel hop or something since it's usually at like 2-3k rpms by time it catches. Once it warms up or you drive for a little while it doesn't do it anymore. Just when you first start up. It can be damn dangerous at times. What the hell is going on?

This may sound silly....have you checked the transmission fluid level?

First thing I'd suspect.

Once you get it going, does it drive ok? What motor/transmission is in it?

tranny could be going bad and need a rebuild, if its just revving then finally catching on after a couple seconds. But check the fluid level first and dont overfill it or it will start shifting softer and lose some of the kick to it (if it had any to begin with). call or go to the local transmission shops. most will look at it and give a free diagnosis/estimate, but make sure to go to at least 2 and make sure they match up, otherwise some of them just want to make money.Plus with automatics they need to be warmed up, you not supposed to just start them up and go. I know i have blown 3 already and they did just that. I have no patience to wait lol
