you've got company, I'm new too and I have an '88 Mustang GT that is a race only car that I run at VMP in Dinwiddie. motor is still basically stock with only a chip, headers, and off road H-pipe minus mufflers but I have done a lot to the rest of the drivetrain to prepare for more horsepower i.e. Strange 9" rear with spool and 4.57 gears and 35 spline race axles; Art Carr Extreme AOD with full manual valve body and SFI flexplate, 90/10 front struts, drag springs, full Autometer gauges, rear upper and lower control arms, racing seat and harness, no other seats, console, radio, etc. car weighs 3,200 lbs with me in it and has run as quick as 13.533 in the 1/4 and as fast as 100.50 mph before I had the 4.57 gears. Not bad for a stock engine with over 108,000 miles on it that has been raced since it had 78,000. How quick is your Firebird? DOMESTICS RULE! JUST SAY NO TO RICE!
