A memorial vigil was held for a Richmond family found murdered in their home New Year’s Day.
Grieving continued at a service Tuesday night at First Unitarian Universalist Church and at Henrico County Schools, where Bryan Harvey worked for nearly six years. As the investigation continues, a State Police profiler is trying to understand who would want to kill this family of four.
Bryan and Kathryn Harvey and their two daughters, Stella, 9, and Ruby, 4, were all found dead in the basement of their Southside home on New Year’s Day. Friends called the fire department when they arrived at the home to attend a scheduled 2 PM New Year’s Day chili party. They found smoke coming from the home in the 800 block of West 31st Street. Firemen discovered the four bodies.
Police confirm all four family members were found bound in their basement. So, they don’t believe this is a murder-suicide.
Police refute earlier reports that all four family members’ throats were slit. Instead, describing the wounds as trauma and cuts.
State Police offered their criminal profiler to Richmond Police to help figure out who could do something so brutal.
Richmond Police are looking for any information on this crime. If you saw anything out of the ordinary at all in the Woodland Heights neighborhood, they want you to call their tip line at: (804) 514-TIPS.
Mourning the loss
As memorials for the Harvey family continue to grow, friends and co-workers continue to come forward to share their thoughts. Bryan Harvey was a Henrico School system technical support specialist and he played in the band, “NrG Krysys.”
Henrico County Schools Superintendent Fred Morton said Bryan had a “gentle sense of humor, quick wit, was a hard worker and was highly valued by his friends and workers alike.”
His wife, Kathryn, was a co-owner of the Carytown gift shop, ‘World of Mirth.’ Dozens of mourners have placed flowers and notes in front of her business, telling her, and the family of four, how much they will be missed.
The Harvey's older child, Stella, attended Richmond's Fox Elementary School. Grief counselors spent the day at the school, helping her classmates cope with the loss of one of their friends.
Dr. Harold Mitchell, Richmond Schools senior psychologist says, “Stella was in the third grade... At that level we explain what happened but with limited details." But, most had heard what happened to her family this weekend.
The flag outside the school flew at half-staff in honor of nine-year-old Stella Harvey.
If you have any information that could help them solve these murders, call this number: 514-TIPS.

Re: DAMN just heard this news....
I've been in Colorado for 10 days and read about it in their paper the day after it happened, they said her half brother was Rex from desperate housewives, didn't hear that since I've been back in Richmond though.
