it looks like a homemade wiring job. its quite bad its like they used speaker wires, or house wiring and when the car is on for too long it smokes from burning the wiring

Well you need to get it fixed asap, my advice go to the junk yard and pull a wiring harness, and wires from a monte carlo, cutlass, regal, grand prix g-body..and re-wire everything up. I never had to rewire my old montes, but I will tell you if the dash doesn't light up the harness to the gauges tends to come loose. Just slide your hand under the dash and push it back into place.

Also I recommend buying a chilton repair manual and going to http://www.montecarloss.com/.. I miss my 85 monte carlo ss, it was my first car and I rebuilt it and restored it and sold it in 2006..I regret it everyday, I had a 400 small block in mine that 305 didn't cut it for me..And I also owned a 87 luxury sport that I made into a lowrider..So any questions feel free to pm me

I miss my old ss I paid 800 for it back in 99 with 23k miles, just had faded paint and the headliner was sagging. The wiring should be the same, since all g-bodies are identical just refer to http://www.montecarloss.com/ for diagram's and etc..I know I keep posting that site but it was really helpful when I had both of my cars, a really good resource
