There's a shop in Japan called Top Fuel that did this about 9 years ago with a Del Sol and a B16, I believe Super Street featured it

There's a lot more metal back there than I realized, there has to be at least 100lbs of tubing back there, easily. That makes a NASCAR side impact cage look like matchsticks.

I'm not convinced of the math part. It there was a lot of math involved, that would be a lot more minimalist. I get the feeling there was a lot of guesstimated reinforcement going on.

I wish I hadn't seen those extra pictures. I still like it, but I'm not as impressed after seeing the rest of it.

thats why i wonder why people use del sols to do this. i thought about all that shit they had to add to the del sol to pass crash tests when they first came out.

That mid engined Integra looks like some really good build quality. Anyone have a link to more pictures or an article?

Well the part that I don't understand is throwing away the entire rear end of the car except for the exterior sheet metal, and then build this huge cage/cradle for the engine and suspension. I'm sure that's kind of an easy way to go about it, but you'd think it would be easier, lighter, and stiffer to add some mounting pads to the unibody and then make a minimal cradle to mount to that. This is the same type of stuff that is done in the front or back of race cars; relocate the engine in the chassis, make a minimal frame that mounts the engine to the unibody, add some minor bracing, and let the OEM chassis do what it was intended for.

The only really important part is to keep the engine from moving around while putting power to the wheels (which is almost trivial) and to locate the suspension, neither of which require a frame that would make industrial machinery blush.

Saw the mid engine integra at VIR once, super clean car and dude had to be at least 50-55 years old that owned it.
