Despite being VWs, I would imagine it's also a reference to the 3-pointed Mercedes star symbolizing motors for "land, water, and air" (Mercedes made engines for all three - among Mercedes enthusiasts - an admittedly small group - "land, water, and air" has immediate meaning)
