Driftwater 14

Post your Driftwater 14 photos here.
I'm in between computer/monitor setups right now, so mine won't be run through PS just yet, just lightroom conversions from RAW. I'll post a link of a gallery to all of them when they're done.
Anybody get a shot of the e39 when it blew coolant all over its windshield by any chance?

4 Attachment(s)
I just took a couple pictures with my cell phone, so forgive the quality

Attachment 196140

I had some spare tires left over from my old wheels, so we decided to run them today just to get them out of the garage... we failed to remember they were a different size that the tires ShadowStyle normally runs. This resulted in the fender completely resting on the tire and smoking like crazy regardless of whether he was drifting or not.

Before:
Attachment 196141

After:
Attachment 196142

Some fine 240SX-owner Macgyver-type rigging right here. If I get enough interest, I will be making a limited-production run of these "custom" mounts. Phone not included.
Attachment 196143

Had a blast as usual, got to see some sick cars make some killer runs, and I got to ride shotgun with a couple of the best. Maybe next time I'll be able to push my heap around the course :D props to Dan and his guys for another kickass event, you guys never disappoint, and even bigger props to everyone who lent a hand when marlinspike's car had a coolant system failure, you guys make the community what it is.

And do you think he tracked it?

:D

Kaden followed me around on one of the final laps, I was trying to conserve tires before they finally let go. I wish I had remembered to film more of my runs, most of the ones I did film I was on a really grippy rear tire and was having trouble linking the course. Next time I'll be running more boost, 4th gear will be nice.

He did not, despite my protest. However, I'm working on getting him to put on his stock wheels and hit the track at the next one, so I can have someone else on the track in a heavy car.

And for those who expressed disbelief that I got 29mpg when I started following the AE86 on the way to the track, here's my mpg for the way back from the track to my house, which was largely scenic instead of interstate with me in between the 86 and its support wagon.

And yes, I have calibrated it to make sure it's accurate.

Matt w - what kind of shutter speed do you use for Driftwater? My only previous motorsports photography experience is the Rolex 24 at Daytona, and those cars were apparently moving quite a bit faster because 1/250 was too fast for Driftwater.

in the panning shots 1/60th or so, but in the larger turns where I wanted a faster speed I bumped it to 1/200th.

Around 1/100 I start to get blurriness in the car from shake. Do you use an IS lens and just use 1-axis of the IS, or do I just need to work on my panning?

looks like so much fun, bummed I couldnt make it.

all those rocks make me cringe, I would have to not give a crap about a vehicle if I brought it out there, how a fresh painted car must look after a day out there would make me sick to my stomach.

would love to have a track vehicle to bring out one day.

I took my e39 out there which is pretty clean. While my day was cut shorter than I would have liked by a cooling system failure, I did more than a few laps. My only damage was a rock that must've skipped on the driver's fender and made two little rock chips that combined would still be smaller than the eraser on a pencil, and I didn't tape up at all.

Besides, I'm pretty sure you know someone who could fix any paint damage....

Which is very easy at Driftwater, especially if you don't drive in the pre-lunch sessions. Now that I told you about the lack of damage you'd sustain, you're going to get Stock or Modified to repaint my fender for free, right? :D

We could even make it a regular thing, and we'll make giant Stock or Modified static clings to throw on the car when at the track and it will be the e39 that always looks perfect despite never taping up :D Hell, it's already nice and stand-outish there, I don't think there are too many other people going to driftwater with low-mileage German lux. I do however need to repaint the hood (chips prior to my buying the car) and repair the rear bumper (previous owner backed into a high curb and it dug into the plastic a bit) to get it perfect though.

just use a burst setting and kep shooting, there is a 1 in 25 success rate for them. No i Is, no mono pod, no nothing but hand holding a gripped 5d with that dumb lens which is heavy.

On a serious note, I need to get my fenders cleaned up and repainted after the pull.I need to swing by sometime. I used to drive by your house all the time when I was heading to my friends place, when I had my gti with gold wheels.Nice wrx/sti if you still have it, haven't been down that street in a while.

Ah, ok, 1 in 25 then my panning isn't the problem, my expectations are lol. I'm definitely bringing my 20D next time instead of the 5D I brought. The 5D is better in every single way, except for the slight amount of free-zoom the crop factor gives the 20D and the slightly faster AF and higher FPS of the 20D. I wish I could get the 5D's images out of the 20D, but don't have the funds for a 5D Mk3 lol.

I remember that car, swing by whenever. If you see me outside(my buddys camaro is in my driveway now and I am always working on it) just stop and introduce yourself and I can give you a quote.

had a crystal grey 05 Sti about 2 years ago, sold it before the baby came. Than more recently had a blue 02 wrx. but got rid of it about 5 months ago.

driving a stock accord right now, but have been on the lookout for another 05 sti. Cant find one that has spotted my eye quite yet that isnt outrageously priced. Have also thought about buying another honda since its pretty easy to find a really nice one that is well priced. Just not sure if I want to even bother with it since I will always yearn again for the Sti. Not sure if I want to quench the modded car thirst by buying a well done honda, or just suck it up and wait till the Sti that is meant to be comes along.

Re: Driftwater 14

the 5d is fine for it, it's no 7d but the burst is good enough for a corner sequence. I keep the focus on AI servo and follow the car the whole time its in view. Every driftwater, I have shot with my 5dmk1 and its done fine.
