I still think it's politics... I just pulled up a list of recalls for a random vehicle (2009 Cobalt) and came up with one where the vehicle can slip out of park and roll away... didn't hear about that in the news either... here's a link to a recall search: National Highway Traffic Safety Administration....

It's as big an issue as it is because of politics, no doubt about that. However, it doesn't take a legitimate concern about build quality or engineering to keep people from buying a brand.

EX: A 60 year old women hears about Prius' not stopping. The chances of her being an informed consumer and knowing that this isn't a serious issue or even knows what ABS is, are very slim.

Word-of-mouth and ignorance can deal crippling blows to a company that's already under scrutiny for potentially deadly defects.

With the Prius brake recall, the pedal disaster and now this... Toyota may have a violent fall from grace.

Broseph
The floor mat recall is because of improperly installed, or non-standard floor mats.
The pedal recall has never been definitively proven and they're made by CTS who supplies other companies as well.
The Prius braking thing is that the ABS may momentarily not work under full braking on a bumpy road... meaning, the wheels may skid for a split second, the brakes work just fine.

This prop shaft one is the only one that may be legit, and it's on the latest batch of Tacomas that mostly haven't been sold yet. Most of the 8000 recalled haven't even been delivered to the dealers yet.

This is just the government doing some gangsta shit.
