Default Totaled Cars.. what's next?

My friend recently wrecked his rsx-S, and it was declared totaled.

I've been trying to convince him to buy it back from the insurance company and part it all out, considering how fresh it was. -- 06 type S. 15,XXX miles on it.

so, if he decides not to buy it back, what eventually happens to it? does insurance scrap it? or are they smart and part it out?

they send it to an auction yard where someone will either buy it for parts or buy it to fix and sell, if its salvageable and worth something.

If he can get it back pretty cheap he should get a civic and swap the motor in it. Then he can sell that or just keep it.
