I was wrong. It's the engine's serial number that you should look at, not the VIN.
If the serial number stamped on the block is #1025385, that engine has the updated bolts. Any engines with a lower number will have the old bolts and you'll probably want to change them for peace of mind. The bolts themselves are under $50, but the job is a bit of a pain in the ass to do.
Just buy an '03 to be safe.

I think Dave pretty much covered all the high points. Checkered Flag Toyota has a New Formula Red 01' with 29k miles on the lot right now. Doesn't have banjo bolts, doesn't have door speakers, and has plastic rear window - but mileage is stupid low!

good luck with the S2K purchase... dave22 pretty much covered everything...
although i dont think the glass rear window came till '03? correct me if im wrong...
'00 - '03 are called the AP1... (2.0L)
'04 - current are the AP2 (2.2L)
'00 - '03 stock setup is gonna have some snap oversteer...
the rear differential is the weak spot... can blow if your into drag racing a lot... (there's reinforcements you can do)
just know the car is gonna be loud... and there's no storage space ...
and watch out for your seats...
and headlights...
