Default SR20det Starter Swap

Hi all, I am looking for a favor concerning my SRd 240sx. I began hearing an awful grinding rotating thud noise last week and decided to pull the transmission to investigate. After finding no noticeable problems I decided to swap in a spare transmission I had to eliminate that as a problem. Last night I was able to re-install the transmission and heard the same noise that caused me to remove the transmission in the first place. I am now wondering if possibly the starter is remaining extended and contacting the flywheel. If anyone is free this week sometime and has an extra SR20 starter they could let me use to test my car I would appreciate it and could buy you a beer or something. The car and I are located near Old Dominion University.

Can you just remove the starter and check for signs of damage?

Can you take the starter to an auto parts store to see if it is operating properly?
