Radar Detectors Q's?
i dont know much about them....all i know is that they are illegal here in VA. what im asking is, is there such a thing as a radar detector detector that cops use? if u get caught with one, what can they do? im assuming that since its not a movning violation, no points will be taken from your record, it will be just a big ole fine. also, which one do u guys recommend?

Yes, they have radar detector detectors, but not all cops have them all of the time (just like BAC testers; aka breathalizers).
Some devices cannot be picked up by cops, like mine.
If you are caught with one in VA, they can take it from you and/or cite you. The offense is NOT a moving violation.
The best to get:
- BEL Vector 985 (has the BEST rated testing compared to others; mine picks up cops way before anybody else's on road trips)
- Valentine ONE (second best, IMO; best part is it alerts you whether the cop is in front or behind)
Both are pertty expensive. But when buying somthing like this, it's not worth paying for the budget options.
I am selling my BEL Vector with case & manual for $200; owned less than a year; I really don't need it anymore because I have to behave for two years or no license.

FYI....
most cops do not sit or drive w/ their radar on; they wait until they have a target/suspect in sight. So, even w/ the best radar detector, it could be too late by the time you know they are near.
Laser jammers are also available, and some models are still legal.

Go read up on radar at www.valentine1.com It has tons of info on radar. My dad had a valentine one and that thing is awesome. Great radar detector. The best budget option if the bell 980, around 100 bucks iirc and is a great detector. I think the fine in VA for having one is 50 bucks and they take your detector. If you get the V1 you can buy a stealth thing for it that basically relocates the display so the actuall unit will be dark.

I do know a fact some State Troopers have the radrar detector - detector. Why? Because I was on 64 on my way to Richmond and got pulled over for having mine up. I wasn't speeding, i was on my way to Indiana so I figured "what the heck.." I got a ticket but its only an equipment violation and the fine is $40. Mostly a kick in the butt. He told me to put it in the trunk.

I have a Bel 815 sti-r (remote mount) I have yet to see any other radar detectors come close to detecting a cop as far away as mine... I forget where my dad got them from... but it was ~300 i think... and its undetectable.... and have yet to have a cop look at me funny...

The Valentine IS THE BEST period hands down, I dont care what anybodu else says. Valentine is also encased in magnesium which makes it inable to be detected by radar detector detector.
The state of VA can not keep your radar detector!! If they do, you can get it back in court, there not illegal to posses just to use. So if a cop takes it, go to court pay your fine and pick it up, if you dont he will be usinbg it. I always have mine on, do not know what I would do with out it.
Most cops in VA do NOT use instint on or laser. I know because I drive almost 700miles a week on local interstates with it all the time, the only time you need to worry about that is real late at night when there is very little traffic on the road.
If ya dont buy the valentine its your mistake....

i had a whistler 1765...it was sweet, even had a compass...never got caught...oh, and VG-2 is what the cops use to see if you have a radar detector...mine cuts off for 30 secs when it detects their's. i sold it for $65 cause i needed some cash...paid $120 for it. imo, it worked gr8...and the law says no points if you get caught...and the court may take it...but you can get it back after that.
