Is Rack and Pinion Worth It?
For those of us not fortunate enought to have a car that came with rack and pinion from the factory, is the conversion from the ancient recirculating ball type steering worth it?..What do ya'll think, what are some of the advantages and disadvantages (other than cost) associated with it.
What are you using the car for? If you are just using it to cruise/go to shows than I really wouldn't worry about it, just extra money. I bought rack and pinion steering for my '75 vette, but that's because I want to do road course driving with it. For drag, a lot of guys I know don't have it and they get by fine with out it. But, if you want a better steering car and you want to get rid of that crappy dead spot, it would be a good investment. So, its all up to you.
What kit are you looking at?

I'd like to drag it a few times, just for fun, but really, I want it to be a driver. I think you get more out of a car if you enjoy the way it drives. It's easy to make a car go fast, it's tricky to get one to drive right. I might take it on a road course eventually, given the chance. Eventually, it will be show ready, at least that's the plan; for now, I'd just like to have it drive and stop well. It's got drum all the way around, and no power vaccuum booster, so...also next on the list is disc conversion up front, and maybe, when I replace the master cylinder, I'll go ahead and add a vaccuum assist. I just got the transmission working again, and thus just got it drivable again, so it's got a long way to go-all the front end has to be replaced...tie rod ends, idler arm, maybe pitman arm for now.
