Default New Motor

I need recommendations for breaking in a new motor, not one thats new as in imported with 30-50k miles im talking brand new. A friend of mine said that you should start up the car and leave it at idle for a while to get it worn in quicker but I'm just looking for input. Thanks!

For me, run it for about 5-10 minutes at around half RPM, let the rings and everything set. Change the oil, go easy for at least 500 miles, then have at it.

when I broke in my motor this is what I did:

put in cheap ass motor oil from Kmart- run for 5 minutes.

Put in good grade motor oil- run for 1000 miles, don't exceed 3500 RPMS.
increase 1000 RPMS for each 500 miles travelled to 3000 miles.

Thats what I did to break in my motor

Go buy some ND 30 oil, its non detergant motor oil.. autozone carries it....I changed the oil after the intially ring seating, then again at 100 miles, again at 200....then at 500 and 1k.

I broke in 2 motors one i had bad luck with oiling issues the other not so much.

The first one i "took it easy" on the motor for 500 miles. Ended up burning a quart of oil every 200miles.

2nd rebuild i rehoned and reringed, and beat the piss out of the car during break in. There's a website(http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm) with how to do it, and that one has suited me fine. If the shits going to fall apart, its going to happen no matter how you drive it. I use the ND30 motor oil for the first few hundred miles before switching to castrol.

The ND oil doesnt protect the motor from friction wear, which is good for break in cause you want the rings to set. I could probably explain that better but there's plenty of good threads. You ask 50 engine builders and you will get 50 different ways to break in a motor.
