Farking Car....
I would tell you to go to a turboford.. but it is just as bad as a sho if you hate dumping money into repairs, but mod's are cheap as hell...
I agree with a DSM, the mods are cheap.. that rule applys to most stock forced induction cars.. exhuast, intake and you gain so much... boost controller/pulley and damn your freking fast.. but just like a turboford and sho the dsm's break down quite a bit.. especially awd..
get a 4 cylinder mustang, put a sho engine in it... then you dont have to worry about transaxle's busting.. or like brokeneck said... festiva and gut the hell out of it.. and tent the piss out of the back three windows...
but if you want economy, go with a honda

I say a muscle car...
My buddy has a 69 Firebird with a 400 BBC that he might be willing to sell (too many toys). You can get a hell of a package in an old muscle car for a good price. The cars are easy to work on, but I'll admit that they're easy to develop problems too... mostly minor upkeep problems. That's something you could only expect from an older muscle car.

better yet
realize racing is pointless and just gets you in trouble.
and if you're not going to run 12's or better noone will give a shit either way at the track.
so buy something that will last, and be comfortable?
A nice GS300 comes to mind..ah.
Real life has to hit eventually.
