Don't buy a VW unless you have money and time...
I just want to let everyone know that I have a VW '01 Jetta GL, that just went through some engine work. This engine work could have been well avoided.
Well let me tell you the story. I was on the bypass doing about 65-70, then I down shifted into 4th, to pass a car. Then I look down at my guages and the water temperature was at about 260 degrees. So I pulled over. After about a month of trial and error and 500 dollars later.
I replaced just every part of my cooling system except the radiator, hoses, heater core, and head gasket. Put when it came down to replace the water pump. The pump's turbine came off in 3 pieces. I also realized that the turbine was made of this very brittle plastic. So, I ended up replacing the water pump, timing belt (it was due for it to be replaced anyways), thermostat, coolant temperature sensor (got fried b/c of the high tempertures), electric coolant fan (burned out b/c of over use, the ecu never turned it off).
The water pump that I replaced it with an OEM water pump, but this time I made sure that it was a full metal pump.
I have a bad experience with the dealership and just the car it self. I would never buy a VW again, that is my opinion. To me they are just headaches.
