Default Diesel Cruze

Chevrolet just announced they will be selling a diesel version of the new Chevy Cruze starting in 2012. Currently there is the Australian version that already has a diesel engine and it gets only 34mpg.

Why would Chevy do this when their current gas model of the cruze can get upwards of 41mpg on gas (Cruze Eco) and then the 1.4L turbo still gets 36mpg?

Someone please explain why they would do this...

So that they will have a vehicle that runs solely on diesel fuel, dragon sperm, and pegasus spit.

Because the diesel version probably actually has some decent power (torque).

That's my only guess, other than Chevy has made nothing but terrible decisions since the onset of this recession.**

My guess would be testing the waters to see if folks would buy a diesel passenger vehicle.

34 mpg is pathetic for a diesel. I want a VW polo.
