So then how do they determine the reliability of say, the FJ cruiser which is a 2007 model and was not made in 2006? Some how it has won first place in reliability for small SUV's on pure speculation.

Drivetrain used in other vehicles? I'm not 100% sure. Consumer Reports usually will say that the vehicle is a new model and they have no data.

Consider the source. There are inconsistencies in the way they measure problems. If there is a problem with body side molding, it should not be as important as transmission problems. There usually are growing pains with first year models......I chose to deal with the small issues so I could enjoy the car.

I agree, problems should be weighted according to what they affect. For example a problem with head gaskets blowing should carry more weight than say a faulty window switch.
