Not to derail this thread, but I've been thinking of getting a new beater lately as well. My only requirement is a/c and dorrs that lock (both features my current beater doesn't have). There's a Mercury Grand Marquis down the road from me for sale..... it's tempting.
As for the OP, I say spend ~5k and get something biased more toward comfort than fun. It's a beater. Save the "fun factor" for whatever nice car you get later.

i could buy a cheap beater car to get me from point a to point b for a few months, so i can get something nice later down the road when my money's right. this is where i'm looking for some insight from the vast experience of vadriven, as i have no clue what i would want, or what i could even get for around $4-5k.
eventually, my plan was after i had been working for a while and prioritized my finances and determined i was in a good enough position i was planning on buying <snip>
Buy a stock Honda something and rock it till your money situation is secure; tracking becomes expensive fairly quickly.

I think the best way to go would be to spend 4-5K on a foxbody.. If mustangs are your thing. You can get a pretty decent one for that price and then when you start making that extra dough, it would make a great weekend car/drag car.

If you're looking for a beater, pick up a $500 runner from a police auction and take it off sweet jumps.
