Car wax for fading paint?
Talked to a guy the other day about this wax they use at Car Max. he says it's great for cars with fading paint, especially black paint. Apparently they swear by it, but for the life of me I can't remember the name. He mentioned it was sold at most car repair stores. Ring a bell anyone?

any cleaner wax, polish or polishing compound should do the trick(depending on how bad it is)...though any method other than painting will be temporary.

well here,
. When you take your wax pad and apply wax to the dull areas of the car, mainly lacking clearcoat, you'll realize that your wax pad will probably pick up the color of the car. Over time the problem will become worse. In this case of waxing the car it would be solely to protect the remaining paint and not as much for appearance. Pre-late 70's automobiles, mustangs and such, didnt use flat base colors like now because they didnt use clearcoats then. They used something like enamels, paints that have some sort of luster without a clear. Considering this car is black the paint could be very flat and most likely non-metallic. The majority of waxes will leave a light residue instead of the "SHINE" you need. I took automotive refinishing classes and my recommendation, depending on the area, would be to get the area wetsanded the re-cleared.

If the paint is properly polished out, wax will still protect it whether it is clearcoated or not.
Why are you talking about putting wax on dull areas of the car, why would you bring that up? Maybe you should change your original statement to "if your paint isn't polished, do not wax it".
Yes, the paint would be better protected by new clearcoat, which would then be the sacrificial layer during polishing, etc., but there is no reason to give up on paint that can easily be polished and waxed...

MY RECOMMENDATION: re-clear......
BEST THING TO DO: re-clear...
IMO, thats like putting water in a bucket with holes on the bottom... polish/wax.....polish/wax.... polish/wax..... its temporary, its doesnt fix the problem, sure it can look nice... but the quality of the paint alone will get worse over time.
