California Cracks Down on Illegal Street Racing

Interesting article. Sucks for the people caught. If this works it could catch on elsewhere.

"That's my heart, my dream," said Hoang, 18, of Chino, who was surrounded by friends as his 1998 Acura Integra was put into a compactor.

Hoang said he was caught late last year racing his prized car, on which he spent at least $10,000 to get into top shape. The 350-horsepower engine topped out at 160 mph, Hoang said, swearing it could beat a Corvette or even a Ferrari.

I was watching this on Fox News yesterday, they televised quitea few crushings. One of the crushed was the cleanest best looking hatch I have ever seen. The owner was there watching it too.

I'm pretty sure engines and transmission have serial numbers that correspond with the VIN number.

Why do you think people that collect old cars are always talking about a "numbers matching" car? :)

So, instead of giving them back to the owners that reported them stolen, or the insurance companies that had to file the claim, they crush them?

This isn't about money for the government, this is about sending a clear message and trying to deter people. Sure, I guess they could sell the parts that were worth something, but that takes away from the impact of what they're trying to say. Plus, the liability involved with gov't selling used performance parts is another facet..

That mostly just proves if it is an all original car or not. All original cars have a higher value. Not really if it has a stolen engine or not.

PS - I might have just completely missed your point and your statement went straight over my head :dunno:

How is this going to stop street racing....Ok you destroy my current car, what's going to stop my from buying something else and racing that?

I say cut off their cut off their right foot.

Why target only street racers? Why not drunk drivers?....you get caught drinking and driving...then vehicle should be crushed.

They should crush all of the rusty body, shackled up, big n' little tired, American Racing wheeled 80s Camaros that roam the streets too.. They could claim bad taste and street racing. Double whammy for doing nothing wrong.

Well, when you race on the streets, you have to know what the chances are, because I guarentee before you floor it or give it the go, you look around for cops. So you know your in the wrong, but it does suck the consequences are so severe, but I guess its better than death!

Yeah, except these guys were not street racing. They were just suspects of it. I thought we were innocent until proven guilty.

Your cool.

Sucks that it happens, although its unfair. I don't think people should get slap on the wrists, but I think crushing cars are extreme.

I lived in so-cal for years
all the stricter laws do is make everyone run

everyone runs....if your girlfriend is watching in her ford ranger, you can bet your ass she is running too.

also, you can have your car srushed for having a jdm or illeagly (emissions) modified car.
everthing has to have a CARB sticker or its hot.
jdm engine? car crushed or sezed.
non carb turbo kit? the same.
non-carb exhaust? 2700$ ticket
we all kept all of our stock parts , and had stock engines in the garage if we got our hoods popped so we could swap it all back to pass the state ref.

it sucks. You really need to have deep pockets to even modify a street car in cali because carb parts are so expensive. So everyone just runs.

Yeah, they're going to sell parts they deem illegal, so the buyers can have illegal modifications on their car. That would make the government super smart huh?

Haha, very true. So many times I would go to the runs in my Camry, just because I was so scared I'd get pulled over just for being in the area. But like you said, when the cops came, everyone ran. Whether you were driving a Toyota Supra, or a Toyota Camry. That was back in '01 though.
...damn I miss Cali... :(
