BMW thought that Americans would prefer a coupe.

And guess what? They are right.

Unlikely since the 1 series was introduced in 2004

That's not really true either.

The European 1 series was powered by N45 & N46 inline 4s and diesel M47s The first N46 inline 6 wasn't introduced until 2006 and the. The N52 & N54 (engines that will power the US 1 series coupe) won't show up until 2008.

And for what it's worth Jermey Clarkson said it's crap

Yes, I'm aware of that.
You're not disproving anything; the chassis is already out there, and the engine is already in another car. Nitpicky semantics aside, it sounds like a proven setup.

Jeremy Clarkson disagrees with a lot of other well respected road testers. Don't care.

There are already many aftermarket tuner versions out with lightweight body components, and wheel and brake packages. A quick tune with Vishnu and well nearly 400hp makes for a pretty fun car to drive. The road testers seem to think the new steering takes away so much from the new BMW's that they no longer feel nimble. I would rather push the theory they are all gaining weight making it more difficult to retain that perfect feel.
Reading the replies on the E46 forums is pure entertainment, the M3 crowd really hates this car, when comparing both on paper the arguement quickly gets taken back to appearance and who will be poppin hoes more. But after years of being up there it falls in line with the other fallacies, somehow the M3 is an exotic/supercar.
