The A4 you are looking at is a very well built car and if taken care of (general/required maintenance) will run for a long time. The 1.8t is a very stout engine and the quatro drivetrain is very good. The aftermarket is nearly unlimited for these cars.
Chip/downpipe/exhuast will be your friend. And if you plan to keep the stock turbo, get an inlet.
I work at a Volkswagen dealership, please do not get me started on VW's reliability. Every tech and service writer here talks about how horrible they are in terms of reliability.
My good friends family owns 2 A4's, both of which are constantly in and out of the shop.

Ok, my friend owns 2 A4's. The CEL's are always on, all kinds of electrical gremilins in these two cars. Water pump cut out on one of them, maybe both of them. Thats all I remember off the top of my head, I'll ask him about it later.

make sure it has been maintained! like stated earlier, they are good cars, but they really need to have the maint. done on them (ie, timing belt, tune up, water pump, etc) higher milage used ones are rather common, and at a good price, but be aware of the cost of repairs on some things.
there have been some issues with the headlamp circuits i have heard (no firsthand experience with the later Audi electrical problems like the older models did, i guess they are getting that taken care of) and make sure its got a good alignment on it too.
there are three recalls out for that year:
00V414000-excessive tie rod wear
99V131001-brake booster vacuum valve failure
99V248000-tie rod seal failure
i would check to see if they had been done first though.

basically read up on audiworld...forget forums like audizine and such. AW has a lot of useful info and basically everything you'll need to know the do's and don't. I've spend numerous hours on that site and having owned a 99 audi A4 2.8 and currently a 01 S4, i'm a very satisfy customer. Dont let one horror story scare the shit outta ya. As long as the car was well taken care of and you have proof of work done, I think you should be okay.
Ive had mine S4 for over 3 yrs now and I plan on keeping it until the day I get the SL 500. Good luck to you
ps. make sure you have a friend or know someone at an independent shop that you trust. I never take my car to dealerships. I swear every tech there wants to take it for a joy ride.
