Interesting survey, as BMW plans on releasing a FWD car line in the near future. Just goes to prove the majority of owners are chasing the roundel and don't care how the car drives.

Don't get me wrong, there's 2-3 models I absolutely adore, but...this is comical

None of this is surprising. Most of this continent doesn't care about vehicle performance, and doesn't have a clue about how cars function or why. If they did, cars would be a lot different because people wouldn't buy most of what is on the market. All they care about is whether you can plug an iPod into the radio, they don't care about front wheel drive or rear wheel drive or driving dynamics or anything like that. That's why the spec sheet has the bare minimum on it, like power, fuel economy, seating capacity, and how many discs the CD changer holds.
Traction control isn't that big of a factor, most BMW owners are never going to approach the traction limit in their cars, no matter what the conditions. Rear wheel drive cars have plenty of understeer engineered into them from the factory for liability reasons.

Incidentally, that's the same reason that everyone but Aston Martin thinks it's a horrible idea to put out the Aston Cygnet and will result in brand dilution. At least BMW kept the 1- rear wheel drive.
I'm not really sure how much of the buying public actually knows that cars are still made with a rear drive layout....?

Exactly.
The 1-series is like the Mercedes C-Class. No self-respecting person ever buys one for themselves; it's given to them by someone (spouse/parents/etc..) to satisfy their material desire in the cheapest way possible. The equivalent year Honda Accord is a much better car in every way except for the hood ornament.
