How the hell did I miss this?

You can absolutely get VTEC with just using a H22 valve cover on your LS motor. You will need, as said before, a vtech controller and a K&N filter, but you're also going to need a vtec solenoid and a B series exhaust cam. You're going to have to mount the solenoid to the top of the valve cover. This is important. Many guys have to cut a hole in their hood, but if you're trying to save a few bucks, that shouldn't be too much of an issue. The cam will need to be placed over your spark plugs in the valley of the valve cover.

Make sure that you also connect a fuel line to the solenoid, since you're going to need to dump more gas in when you hit VTEC. Also, you're going to need to tap your oil pan. Don't worry about connecting anything to it, but the increase oil pressure of VTEC might cause you blow the oil pan gasket if you don't have a hole tapped in there for some relief.

I wondered why my oilpan blew off when I ramped up the boost.

This is very applicable for 4.6L S/C V8s as well

I've heard about the oil pan issue before. That's why GM went ahead and installed a dry sump oil system in my car. I saw some VTEC kits on eBay but I'm not sure if they are just using refurbed parts or not.

Here's one I found:
