For the first time in the history of the automobile, a front wheel drive car has run a quarter-mile in less than eight seconds. Import drag racing veteran Lisa Kubo, who has flirted with the mark since last year, broke the long-standing barrier in the Ecotec-powered APC Saturn Motorsports Ion Coupe. Kubo stopped the clocks at 7.96@180.83 on her first Saturday qualifying effort during the NHRA BF Goodrich Tires Sport Compact Nationals being held this weekend at Moroso Motorsports Park.

Kubo had run a record-setting 8.02-second pass at the NHRA Summit Sport Compact season opener to further galvanize speculation that the Saturn would hit the mark ahead of challengers like Nelson Hoyos, Shaun Carlson, and Ed Bergenholtz. Nonetheless, Kubo said she was still surprised by the pass. (The 7.96-second pass had not been backed up for the offical ProFWD record by the end of qualifying)
