nn bait car
Catching crooks in Newport News is getting more high tech.
Nearly every day in the city two cars are stolen. Now officers have found a way to bait thieves in and arrest them minutes after the crime.
Police are setting up what's called a bait car. It belongs to the department and is waiting for a criminal to walk in and ride off, all while hidden cameras roll inside.
Police say many of the criminals are young kids looking for a joy ride. The bait car allows police at a computer to track the car and even turn off the ignition as soon as it's stolen.
The bait cars have helped police arrest more than a dozen criminals in the past year. Anyone convicted of grand larceny can face up to twenty years in prison.
