Default Newport News towing laws?

I come home last night to find my car missing. To make this story short, I found out that my car was towed. So I track down a number for the tow company by calling the apartment office after hours line. I ask the guy why my car was towed out of my parking space that was assigned to my apartment number, he tells me because I didn't have a parking decal and he was doing a random check on Sunday night. He then goes on tells me that he has to get twenty cars out of there by the end of the month and that I'm going to have to pay him 125 dollars to get my car back.

My apartment complex implemented a parking decal policy at the end of may, but I hadn't been notified either by phone or mail. I checked my renter's agreement, lease and there is no such rule or policy stated anywhere on the agreement. I paid my rent at the beginning of June and I wasn't informed of the the new parking policy.

My question is what happened to my car legal in Newport News? There is only a generic private property sign, but no signs about towing enforced on property. I went and checked cars around me and only a few of them actually had decals.

Opinions? What would Brian Boitano do?!

You were on private property and thus the complex can do whatever they want.

You appear to be aware of the sticker policy.

I recommend paying it and moving on.

I thought the law is that it has to be stated at every entrace to the parking lot... No sign, no tow.

Possibly, but the complex can still do what they want esp. since he was aware of the policy even though he says they didn't tell him.

I'm aware of the sticker policy now after my car got towed.

My issue is not about the cost, but how can a landlord make a change that drastic and not properly notify the tenant of the policy change.

You'll have to check. They can do whatever they want but you may want to make sure there wasn't a note in your mailbox that you tossed or something like that.

Example: My apt started taking section 8 housing and didn't tell us shit. We didn't find out until I was getting ready to move and started seeing a drastic shift in the demographics
