I've grasped it, but some things need to be said multiple times for it to be ingrained into peoples heads. I am still confused as to why you would want to do it in public though. To me, that is the ignorant part.

As to doing it in public, it is illegal, so pretty much everywhere you do it would be considered public. If you mean "out in the open", then I believe its only stupid if you make it stupid - I.E. acting like an idiot, being loud, doing things to draw attention, none of which we did.

Would you have known we were smoking if somebody(or this site) hadn't pointed it out to you?

No. My point is that I don't want to be around it, so I'd actually rather know its being done. Like I said before, some people have a lot to lose. I'm one of those people.
