Thumbs up First off-track experience @ VIR and trial by fire rotor change!

Sunday was another great day at VIR and fortunately I came home all in one piece.

I was playing with a 2003 996 Porshe (not turbo) all day. The guy was from Pennsylvania and super cool. He was stock but was running on Micheline Polot Cup tires (not street tires), and was a great driver. He said that the only way he could keep up with me was by out breaking me, but in the turns and in the straights I'd leave his butt. I told him the only reason he could out break me was because I take my braking zones semi-easy :yesnod:

Well we'd take turns following each other as we were the two fastest cars in our group (a few RX-7's could keep up pretty well). I was following the Porsche going through turn 1 pushing it hard. The Porsche spun and I had to let off to avoid hitting him. Well when you let off going full bore in a turn you bitch slap the "traction circle", unweight the rear tires, and around you go! I couldn't save it (AH was off b/c my SS brake lines kept throwing codes) so I went both feet in and slid off the track to the inside of turn 2. Luckily the RX-7 behind me didn't T-bone me and all ended up fine. I knew it was when, not if I'd go off track. This was my 9th track day and I drive the car qiet hard.

As for the brakes... I felt a "thump thump thump" in the begining of my second session but thought maybe I tapered my pads. I kept going as the car still stopped fine. When I got off I found out that my RF rotor was split! The rotors have a bit over 20,000 miles on them and had small heat checks on them. I figured they'd be good for one more event, but the new Hawk Blues did them in. I was lucky in that I brought a spare set of rotors with me. Problem was I never changed them before. Turns out it's simple and I did it in a bit under 30 min!

It's only simple if you rotors just float. Some cars have packed wheel bearings and changing rotors is a huge job.

Yeah both cars were fine. VIR has lost of open fields in most areas so you can mess up and get away with it for the most part.

I wish someone took a picture of that.

I know why you were doing it, but still, it just sounds funny.

yeah it was kinda funny to see 2 shiny big rotos each sitting in a sink getting washed

but hey, it was a racetrack, anything car-related could happen, lol
