Default wheel spacers

on the 96-00 civics what is the biggest size spacer you can run safely without extended studs? 10mm?

Mark, just measure it out determine where the wheel would sit using the dial calipers over there and then look and see how much thread you would have left. You know well enough to know whether or not its enough thread

10mm is about 0.4 inches. That's a lot less thread engagement than stock, and the studs aren't usually very long to begin with if the car comes with closed-end lugnuts.

Quick rule of thumb:go count how many full threads on a nut of the same size and pitch, that is how many you must have sticking out to engage your lugnut.

To be super technical, the shear stresses on the actual thread engagement must be greater than the failing minor diameter of the actual stud (stud should snap before engaged threads pull out or strip).

Don't you mean that the shear strength must be greater? You don't want more shear stress, that would be bad.
