What does shaft play sound like??
On Turbos....
I hear this sound kinda like a metallic baby rattle when i accelerate. Only at low speeds.
I popped the hood and tweaked the tb while i listened around and isolated teh sound the general vicinity of the turbo. Since it was raining and whatnot i didnt get a chance to check teh cat heat shield for the rattle.
So back to my original question can you hear turbo shaft play and if so what does it sound like?

Could be shaft play from worn/damaged bearings, could be a damaged wheel, could be something completely different. I can't picture the sound you're describing coming from a sloppy shaft though.. Are you burning oil?

Take your pointer finger and thumb, pinch and hold the side of your cheek and then proceed to pull your cheek out and in rapidly. It's call hot dog in a hall wall syndrome or "shaft play".
Ok but in all seriousness, a pinging sound is an easy way to identify if there is a lot of shaft play without actually going in depth and looking at it. It's obviously caused from the blades hitting the housing. At that point, it's normally too late to salvage.

If you suspect shaft play, get to the snail. Check it by hand. Play with the shaft.
